APPLIANCE MOM re-imagines the rituals and mementos that were once used to document family life. How can individuals claim an archive of mementos that mark the passage of time? How do we participate in those familial rituals all by ourselves? Recalling that strangely quiet corner of The Bay, or Eaton’s, where once a year a family portrait was taken.

Who would be in that portrait now, what or who do we actually share our lives with? How can we purge the built up affection stored in our bodies from ever more isolated urban existences? Can we domestically assemble a substitute or a reasonable facsimile for family that can be satisfying in terms of affection shared? APPLIANCE MOM takes up the duties and delights of family life and imagines how an individual person might participate.
